SoFi Bank Review: Modern Banking Without the Fees
SoFi is a modern digital bank that offers competitive interest rates, no fees, and a user-friendly online experience. Key features include a simple sign-up process, Vaults for organizing savings, early direct deposit, and hands-off investing options.

Traditional banks can feel outdated, but SoFi is a newer, digital-first bank that keeps making improvements. After using SoFi for almost a year, I can say it has a lot to offer—competitive interest rates, no fees, and a smooth online experience. If you're considering switching to a more modern bank, here's my take on SoFi.
Easy Sign-Up Process
One thing I appreciated right away was how quick and simple it was to open an account. It took me less than 15 minutes, and they didn’t ask for anything unusual compared to other banks. I signed up on my laptop, and I was pleasantly surprised by how fresh and modern the website felt—much better than the clunky sites some traditional banks still use.
Checking & Savings: Good Interest Rates & No Fees
When I first joined SoFi in April 2024, their savings account offered 4.6% APY, which was one of the best rates available. While it has since dropped to 3.8%, it’s still competitive. The checking account APY is 0.50%, which is fairly standard.
The best part? No fees. After nearly a year, I haven’t had to pay a single maintenance, overdraft, or transfer fee—something that traditional banks often sneak in.
Vaults: A Smart Way to Organize Savings
SoFi’s Vaults feature is one of my favorite tools. It lets you split up your savings into different categories without opening separate accounts. I use Vaults to set aside money for bills, emergency savings, and upcoming expenses. It’s an easy way to stay organized and keep track of financial goals.

Direct Deposit & Early Pay Access
SoFi offers early direct deposit, which is honestly one of the coolest perks. I get paid every other Friday, but with SoFi, my paycheck usually lands in my account by Wednesday night or Thursday morning. While part of this depends on my employer, SoFi helps speed things up, and I love having access to my money sooner.
ATM Access: Not the Best for Cash Users
I don’t use ATMs much, but SoFi does offer partner ATMs with a lot of locations. That said, if you frequently need to withdraw cash or visit a bank branch, this might not be the best fit for you.
Investing with SoFi: Hands-Off & Easy
I also use SoFi’s automated investing, and it’s perfect for people like me who don’t want to get too deep into stock picking. They offer ETFs, IPOs, and other investment options, though they don’t currently support cryptocurrency trading. I wouldn’t be surprised if they add it in the future.
Mobile App vs. Website: One Feels More Modern
The mobile app is solid—8.5/10. It’s sleek and easy to navigate, but sometimes it feels cluttered with ads and extra features. That said, they update it regularly, which is great.
The desktop website, on the other hand, feels like it was built before the app and hasn’t quite caught up. It works fine, but it could use a refresh to match the app’s more modern experience.

Budgeting & Spending Tools: Could Use an Upgrade
SoFi has a built-in budgeting tool, kind of like what Mint or Monarch Money offer. It’s useful for getting a general overview of finances, but it’s pretty basic. If they improved this feature by adding better tracking and external account syncing, it would make a big difference.
Exclusive Perks: A Nice Bonus
One cool perk I’ve actually used is VIP entry to SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles. I got to skip the line and enter a members-only lounge, which was a nice touch. Not a dealbreaker, but a fun extra if you attend events there.
Would I Recommend SoFi?
Yes—as long as you don’t need frequent ATM or in-person banking services. SoFi is a great digital bank that keeps rolling out new features. Unlike big banks, they actually listen to user feedback and improve their platform.
With no fees, solid savings rates, the Vaults feature, and early paycheck access, it’s a great choice for anyone looking for a modern, hassle-free banking experience.
Final Thoughts
SoFi is a tech-savvy bank that keeps evolving. While it’s not radically different from other online banks, it offers enough perks to make it stand out. If they keep up the improvements, I’ll be sticking with them for the long haul.
